dear madam

in most of the colleges already there are digital library where in students can sit and study and only we need to add what is already present and total cost will be less in long run as its one time investment.

thanks

dear sir

i strongly disagrre to your points of costly affair as some of medical books are costlier than gadgets and every college gas digital library which is open morning till night and students can sit and submit responses if they have monitory isssues.

we are trying to blend traditional teaching with e learning to get the best out of students. we are not replacing one curriculum by other.

Respected Dr Shobha madam

I would like to dispute few points

1. E learning is not complex technology it just needs a laptop/computer and net connection. Cost is less than few medical books…

2. For bringing up change we have to develop e-curriculum.

3. We are not replacing traditional learning to worry we are only adding e learning to present curriculum and get maximum advantage

4. As patients are real examiners we are trying to acquire cognitive domain component in e learning for psychomotor domain we definitely have to depend on patients.

5. We are not producing medical students by online course we are only using technology to bring the best in them along with traditional teaching. They will be more competent when they learn by intention and interest.

Dear madam

I would like to clarify your doubts

1. Concentration lapse is not the major issue here because student is learning when he wants to learn not when we want them to them. He/she will be more active in e learning

2. In todays world its only geriatric population which is finding difficulty in learning and most our population is young and already techno savvy and it should not be a hindrance. And for those who have difficulty we can teach them.

3. Problems of connectivity is not a major issue as no one in todays scenario dependence on single net connectivity and they can use wifi tethering of friends to connect. Even in traditional learning students miss classes due to logistic or domestic problem.

Thanks for raising issues and hope I have clarified them

Dear madam

I would like to clarify few points raised,

As already pointed out by you madam students are techno savvy and what we are trying to do is use the same medium which they use as means of learning. It actually gives them time to both socialize and concentrate on studies according to their wish. There will be good mentor and student interaction. Our students are mature enough to understand the need to study. And for for those students who focus on socialising they will do it even in traditional class the same.

I am Dr Padmanabh Inamdar (ACME 2017) belonging to group 1 “For the Motion” i.e. e-learning is the need of the hour and here are my views in support of e-learning:

• Generally, it is believed that online learning student won’t be paying much attention and will not give class room atmosphere. But I am of opinion that Online learning is no longer the “easy way out”, as we think. In fact, online learning environments are more rigorous, and student is active learner here.

• A person can be physically present in the classroom, but mentally absent, and no one would know. But in an online environment, especially during live discussions, each participant must be mentally present to progress towards the learning goal of the discussion.

• Synchronous or LIVE activities are real-time activities that require the online presence of all learners and the instructor. These activities involve commenting and forming opinions on a concept presented by the instructor. This is very similar to a traditional class discussion activity.

• There is opportunity for the instructor in online mode to moderate and redirect the conversation towards the desired objective. He can remind them caution them to stay on the topic and avoid correcting typed language by other participants.

• Online discussions can be held in in an asynchronous environment. Learners and instructors log in at their convenience and add their comments (according to the commenting rubric). The instructor and peers provide feedback on their own schedule. This creates a self-paced learning environment. Hence, it is no longer about who knows the most at the current time, rather, who prepared the most for a given time. Students can also enjoy the flexibility of submitting their opinions online. The quality of discussion might also prove to be greater than live discussion, simply due to the fact that we reveal more and form better ideas, when we write.

• A greater deal of self-direction and discipline is required for a successful online education. Here the student holds greater responsibility towards their learning. They are conscious of their time and schedule, and try to meet deadlines they have signed up for, by accepting the course. A traditional learning environment, on the other hand, does not require a similar degree of self-discipline nor is it flexible in terms of deadlines and class meeting times.

• Online Learning has greater Reading Requirements - A lot is said and done in a traditional classroom through language, facial expressions, and body language. To make up for such clues and ideas, online courses have greater reading requirements. It is safe to project that the online learning environment is a greater reading environment. For first, the instructor posts a lesson and related readings. Moreover, the assignment has more directions and a deadline to adhere to. As for the learners, they complete the assignment and upload it to the learning management system.

• Compared to where traditional lecture which progresses through notes reading and writing in online mode there are activities and interacting with peers and an instructor requires emotional writing skills that portray the message as accurately as possible. Even though feedback is delayed compared to traditional teaching the lag time can be shortened by including multiple peers.

• As all our students are tech savvy and this digital literacy is what we can use navigate, discuss and create information as students already know basic word and numerical processing. Most of them already have smart phone and access to net in college library.

• There is scope for creating social media page for the scope and mention all relevant points which students can ponder over when needed. Successful online students are prepared for the dynamic technical environment and strive to enhance their expertise in using technical tools. A Facebook page can be created, and students can be added as friend’s request. We can reach out to vast volume of peers with this.

• The big difference is role played by teacher. In traditional classroom the instructor leads the learning process and teaching is pedagogy where as role is changed to facilitator and becomes a mentor who only guides the students to learn. There is increased student autonomy and enhanced individual learning. This shift from a curriculum-centered to a learner-centered environment makes eLearning a winning proposition.

• At the same time e-learning is not entirely different from traditional learning which our students are used to, as it also involves presentation of ideas by the students, group discussions, arguments and any other forms of conveying information and accumulating knowledge. The contents of the course’s curriculum might be organized according to subjects and in a serial manner.

• E learning also has additional advantages like time for digesting the information and responding, enhanced communication among the learners, both about quality and as regards urgency, knowledge being acquired and transferred among the students themselves, the ability to conduct an open discussion, where each learner gets more of an equal standing than in a face-to-face discussion, access to information and to discussion ability, responses may be made around the clock with no restrictions, a higher motivation and involvement in the process on the part of the learners.

There are many points in favour of e-Learning which presents a ton of advantages over traditional formats of training. Because of always-on, always-connected culture of online learning I think e-learning should be introduced in our traditional medical education and hence is the need of the hour.

Thank you all
