Dear all co learners

whole world is changing...technology is changing...learners are changing..& teaching & learning also changing...

Actually It's what learners want - really

The recent report from Towards Maturity on the gap between corporate learning and what learners actually want highlights that, when given a choice, learners want mobile, relevant, personalised and self-paced content at a point of need. What they get, is often a little different - with too much emphasis on face-to-face and long courses.

The digital revolution and smartphone boom has triggered huge changes in how we access, consume, discuss, and share content. Naturally, learning is following suit. Whilst many want learning at a point of need, many learn in evenings and at weekends and on the way to or from work.

A key advantage to getting your learning online and multi-device is that it ensures you are in sync with modern learners - delivering the type of content they want, when they want it. Get learners on-side, and you're more likely to get the results you need. Plus, digital, self-paced learning can be accessed at point of need, not somewhere else - like a classroom far away - so employees can apply what they've learnt straight away.

The Towards Maturity report and our Insights report, also highlight learners' leaning towards social and collaborative learning. Technology can support and enable this, at a global scale. So, basically, digital is where it's at, all round.

See some examples:

Rolls Royce: A multi-device and personalised learning solution that has gamification techniques at its heart.

EasyJet Onboarding: A blended approach that helps get 1,500 new recruits a year up to speed, with a sustainable solution.

You can read the report from Towards Maturity here.

Faster delivery

At a time when change is faster than ever, a key advantage of elearning is that it has quicker delivery cycle times than traditional classroom-based instruction. In fact, research[1-2] indicates that elearning reduces learning time by at least 25 to 60 percent when compared to traditional learning. Elearning cuts down on the training time required because:

it does not take as long to start and wrap up a learning session

learners set their own pace, rather than the pace of the group

no travel time is needed to get to and from training events

learners can focus on elements of a programme they need to learn and can skip what they already know

Alongside these factors, there is also a practical limitation on how quickly learning can be rolled out with classroom-based instruction, as the capacity to deliver is limited by the number of available classrooms and trainers. Our rapid elearning service on the other hand, has enabled organisations to create and roll out training programmes within weeks, or even days.

To learn more, you can find our rapid elearning case studies here.

Lower costs

Because of the speed and ease in which elearning is delivered, the costs of learning and development for an organisation are drastically reduced.

There are the immediate cost-effective gains of elearning in terms of reducing training time as well as cost-effective savings in terms of trainers, course materials, travel and accommodation. However, it is equally important to highlight that elearning, when done right, can also improve an organisation’s profitability. Kineo has a number of ROI case studies which demonstrate the immediate and long-term financial benefits of elearning, including:

McDonald's who saved £5m over 2 years with their Business Controls Elearning, as well as seeing a 10% sales growth as a result of the training. View the full case study here.

Compass Group whose programme demonstrated an estimated cost reduction of £495k in 6 months as a result of no longer needing to pay for accommodation, travel, time out of the business, external trainers or materials. The full case study can be seen here.

More effective elearning

Our case studies show time and again that elearning courses can have a positive and direct impact on an organisation’s profitability by making it easy to learn and digest information.

Studies on elearning[3] and evidence found in Kineo case studies have made it increasingly clear that elearning has the following positive benefits for learners:

better attitude toward the elearning format and training in general

improved scores on tests, certifications or other evaluations

increase in number of learners who achieve ‘mastery’ level and / or ‘pass’ exams

greater ability to apply the new knowledge or processes on the job

better long-term retention of information

Lower environmental impact

By providing an alternative to the paper-based learning and testing of traditional classrooms, elearning is an effective way for organisations to significantly reduce their carbon footprint.

A study by the Open University found that on average, the production and provision of distance learning courses consumed nearly 90 percent less energy and produced 85 percent fewer CO2 emissions per student than conventional campus-based university courses.

The key areas in which elearning lowers an organisations’ environmental impact are as follows:

cuts down on the travel and accommodation costs associated with undertaking a course

reduces the need for a campus site and the accompanying costs of maintaining the facility and equipment

eliminates the need for paper, thus saving trees

so i support ...E learning is need of hour.

thanking you.

regards.

Our case studies show time and again that elearning courses can have a positive and direct impact on an organisation’s profitability by making it easy to learn and digest information.

It could be profitable by reducing the number of staff and infrastructure required to teach the medical graduates. But does it actually improves the outcome of medical students learning, I have a big doubt.

Training and experience from teachers in real sense is the one I believe is much more important than viewing it online.

E- learning could enhance the already learnt concepts of students but would not aid in learning new knowledge the first time.

Hence it cannot replace the traditional classes and clinics in medical school.

Real time training with direct interaction with teachers does give an upper hand to traditional method of learning.

Many students do have a positive attitude towards e-Learning but do not favour the traditional learning being replaced by e-learning

Dear Dr.K.P.Joshi,

Very extensive & valid argument in favour of e-Learning.But----

1.The development of case scenarios is very time consuming and interactivty is still limited by the imagination of the subject expert writing the case and, to some degree, by the content engineer who programmes it.

2.Even with today’s extensive and pervasive use of technology in medical education, some of the basic questions related to the role of e-learning remain unanswered, such as:

i. What is an effective approach to integrating technology into pre-clinical vs. clinical training?

ii. What evidence exists regarding the type and format of e-learning technology suitable for medical specialties and clinical settings?

iii.Which design features are known to be effective in designing on-line patient simulation cases, tutorials, or clinical exams?

iv.What guidelines exist for determining an appropriate blend of instructional strategies, including on-line learning, face-to-face instruction, and performance-based skill practices?

3.Internet security & intrution by hackers is definitely one of the biggest problems of the Internet.

dear dr.sharon

your points are valid...i would like to clarify few points

1. E leaning specially blended learning can play very important role pre-clinical vs. clinical training. studies proved very good improvement in student's learning.

2.There are various E learning modalities tested by various people.

1Asynchronous audio or video: Teachers can post audio (podcast as mp3 files) or video files (vodcast) These files are automatically sent to a subscriber’s computer or mobile hand held device like smart phones. There needs to be a centrally placed distributor called podcatcher which is responsible for sending the files to the subscribers (students).

2Blended Learning: Online or computer based learning with face to face teaching is called blended learning. The goal of blended learning is to provide the most efficient and effective instruction experience by combining different delivery modalities.

3Chat / Video Conference: Chat can be in the form of text-only, audio or audio and video (e.g. Skype). Chats can include or be supervised by teacher or it can be among students only (for example, group discussions for online collaboration).

4Computer-aided Learning (Courseware): These are either online or most commonly media based textual, pictorial, video or interactive exercises with self-assessment questions and immediate feedback.

5Computer Based Tests: Instead of having scenarios (A-type), MCQs can have audio, video or flash animations to improve their validity. Tests can be given with time limit and attempt restrictions. It’s a very important tool especially for formative individualized feedback to students.

6Educational online games / experiences: There is a large collection of online educational games; they allow students to interact and receive feedback from the game/ activities.

7ePBL: A case is created and distributed through email or VLE. Students interact with each other and with a facilitator via chat room, forum, email or whiteboard. The facilitator may take the role of the traditional facilitator or role-play the characters in the case.

8ePortfolio: The learner builds and maintains a digital repository of his activities and achievements online, which they can use to demonstrate competence and reflects on their learning.

9Online collaboration (Wikis, Blogs and Interactive Whiteboards): Students work collaboratively without restriction of time and space. There are many tools to enable group collaboration online, including wikis, blogs, Google Drive, interactive whiteboards. Teachers facilitate and answer questions but usually don’t actively participate in collaborative assignments.

10Online Discussions Forums: Discussions can be started on a specific topic by a student or faculty member and others can reply to the issue posted (threaded discussions). There are various options for how to structure these; for example conversation topics can either be assigned or open. Another type of discussion forum is Question and Answer in which teacher asked a question and student have to post first their answer before they can see other students response. It is possible to keep participation restricted for students or students and teachers. In many postgraduate courses, discussion forums are used as collaborative learning activities.

11Repository and Hypertext: Teachers can post readings or links to readings on a public or secure website. Readings can be in the form of html pages, PDFs, Word documents or PowerPoint etc. Hypertext can be in the form of online books, webpages of organized and interrelated materials, to random collection of text studded with links to pages all over the world.

12Synchronous audio or video: This could be an online broadcasting of a traditional lecture or seminar, but can also be a collective viewing of a presentation (SlideShare) with chat. Different paid and free solutions are available easily.

13Virtual classrooms: A virtual reality space (Second Life) can be used to resemble a traditional real life classroom. Students and teachers create avatars (online representations of their own) and login online simultaneously in the virtual space. The teacher can then lead a usual lecture or small group discussion or an entirely new, multimedia event can be created for more learning engagement.

14.Virtual learning Environments (VLE): These are frameworks into which learning material with different activities are inbuilt. In VLE teaching and administrative tools are available in a single system. The activities present in a typical VLE are forums, chats, lessons, wikis, blogs, assignments and quizzes etc. All VLE can incorporate third party modules with SCORM packages. VLE are either open source (Moodle, Sakai) or commercial (Blackboard, WebCT)

3.There are so many methods to get full internet security.

so i feel E learning is need of hour.

I am Dr Satish Patil of ACME 2017 batch. I am for the motion e –learning is the need of the hour.

The most important thing that stand out in favour of e-learning is the flexibility involved-learning provides the flexibility in all the aspects of the e-learning. Flexibility with respect to the time, pace, learning styles, course selection etc. Learning can be scheduled around personal and professional work. Learners may have the option to select learning materials that meets their level of knowledge and interest. Learners can study wherever they have access to a computer and Internet. Self-paced learning modules allow learners to work at their own pace. Different learning styles are addressed and facilitation of learning occurs through varied activities. Course selection can be varied from the basic to more advanced courses. Learning can be customized according to need and the potential. The cost involved is also less. Courses are available that suites the budget needs of everyone.

Thanks.

E-learning technologies offer learners control over content, learning sequence, pace of learning, time, and often media, allowing them to tailor their experiences to meet their personal learning objectives.

In diverse medical education contexts, e-learning appears to be at least as effective as traditional instructor-led methods such as lectures. Students do not see e-learning as replacing traditional instructor-led training but as a complement to it, forming part of a blended-learning strategy.

A developing infrastructure to support e-learning within medical education includes repositories, or digital libraries, to manage access to e-learning materials, consensus on technical standardization, and methods for peer review of these resources.

E-learning presents numerous research opportunities for faculty, along with continuing challenges for documenting scholarship.

Innovations in e-learning technologies point toward a revolution in education, allowing learning to be individualized (adaptive learning), enhancing learners' interactions with others (collaborative learning), and transforming the role of the teacher.

The integration of e-learning into medical education can catalyze the shift toward applying adult learning theory, where educators will no longer serve mainly as the distributors of content, but will become more involved as facilitators of learning and assessors of competency.

SO e-learning is NEED OF THE HOUR

I am Dr.Farah from 2016 A batch,

My inputs for the motion “e-learning is the need of the hour “ are as follows,

The environment in which medical students learn today is vastly different than it was 20 years ago when the Internet was not such a dominant tool in medical education. E-learning platforms are now increasingly utilized by medical schools around the world and comprise adaptive tutorials, audiovisual clips, and virtual models. These educational media possess several distinct advantages over traditional didactic models of instruction, including the ability to update material in a timely manner to ensure delivery of the latest evidence-based content to trainees. E-learning has been demonstrated to be as effective as conventional didacticism and can be used to foster self-directed learning. It encourages medical students to exert greater control over their learning by allowing flexibility over content and pace. In such models, educators can evaluate competencies objectively through online assessments, enabling students to receive personalized feedback for self-improvement.

E-learning will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the environment in which future medical students learn.

Learning in a classroom is more personal and interactive, but there are a lot of benefits to enrolling in an online course, and most of it is in terms of convenience and affordability.

e learning is the need of the hour because of the following advantges

1. We are able to link the various resources in several varying formats.

2. It is a very efficient way of delivering courses online.

3. Due to its convenience and flexibility, the resources are available from anywhere and at any time.

4. Everyone, who are part time students or are working full time, can take advantage of web-based learning.

5. Web-based learning promotes active and independent learning.

6. As we have access to the net 24x7, you can train yourself anytime and from anywhere also.

7. It is a very convenient and flexible option; above all, you don't have to depend on anyone for anything.

8. Not only we can train ourselves on a day to day basis, but also on weekends or whenever we have the free time to. There is no hard and fast rule.

9. Through discussion boards and chats, we are able to interact with everyone online and also clear our doubts if any.

10. The video instructions that are provided for audio and video learning can be rewound and seen and heard again and again if we do not happen to understand the topic first time around.

e-learning is the need of the Hour: for the motion

• E-learning plays an important role in the educational growth.

• 21st century declared to be the age of information and communication technology. This is the time when more people everywhere are involved in acquiring new knowledge and skills.

• We can not work in the society without on-line technology & has entered the field of education.

• The integration of e-learning in medical education is the need of the hour. Medical Council of India (MCI), the regulatory body of medical education in India, has recognized the importance of the technology and has included the use of electronic means in the broad competency “Lifelong learner committed to continuous improvement of skills and knowledge”.

• The student has to continuously acquire new skills and keep himself abreast of latest development, a goal presently considered difficult to attain in the absence of technology. The use of e-learning can help them achieve the goal of continuous professional development, considering the vastness of syllabus, paucity of time, and already overburdened schedules.

• ‘Digital natives’, “generation Y”, or the ‘net generation’, with sophisticated technical skills and learning preferences --for which traditional education is unprepared/do not match.

• The differences are so significant that the nature of education itself must fundamentally change to accommodate the skills and interests of these ‘digital natives’.

• Technology is a powerful tool for effective teaching and deeper learning. Incorporating technology into teaching and learning activities introduces new thinking about teaching effectively.

• It also increases opportunities to invent new learning experiences for students that will take us further beyond traditional classroom or lecture-based learning.

• E-learning adds many dimensions to the educational process and if utilized well, has the potential to enhance both the students and instructors educational experience.

• In this changing paradigm, educators no longer serve as the sole distributors of content, but are becoming facilitators of learning and assessors of competency. E-learning offers the opportunity for educators to evolve into this new role by providing them with a set of online resources to facilitate the learning process.

• A key advantage of e-learning is that learners have control over the content, learning sequence, pace of learning, time and, often, media offering choices to suit different learning styles.

• Evidence suggests that e-learning is more efficient because learners gain knowledge, skills, and attitudes faster than through traditional methods.

• E-learners demonstrate increased retention rates and better utilization of content, resulting in better achievement of knowledge, skills, and attitudes (Clark, 2002).

• The presence of desired resources likely makes internalization more efficient as it can be accessed at any time and can be carefully scripted and delivered to facilitate internalization.

• Increased accessibility are helpful for those with full time jobs or family obligations, to take classes remotely while securing or maintaining employment or housing at a distant location.

E-LEARNING SERVICES CAN SUPPORT

• Shortage of trained faculty and increase in number of medical students and colleges in India.

• Deteriorating standards in Medical education ??

• Online resources can reach out across time and space barriers.

BENEFITS

• e-learning can result in significant cost-savings, compared with traditional instructor-led learning (Gibbons, 2000).

• Savings are related to reduced instructor training time, travel costs, labor costs, reduced institutional infrastructure, and the chance to expand programs with new educational technologies (Gibbons 2000).

• Take advantage of digital technology and workers in resource poor countries with learning copyright-free content to resources that will be effective in improving health outcomes

• Develop short learning modules that actively engage the learner

• Involve health staff in resource-poor countries

• Learner satisfaction is high with e-learning as compared to more traditional forms of education.

• Effective educational complement in many scenarios.

• With the growing prevalence of online resources for medical students, evaluating the role of e-learning as a primary source for educational purposes may be feasible in the near future.

• Cook explains that e-learning, one to be studied and evaluated for “when” and “how” it should be utilized, and not “if ” it should be utilized.

• The shift toward competency-based curricula, the complexity and breadth of medical education content, changes in health care delivery and advances in medicine have all increased demands on doctors to update their knowledge constantly. These factors require adaptations in education and e-learning is a proposed solution.

Dr Arvind Sangavi B.

I am Dr Padmanabh Inamdar (ACME 2017) belonging to group 1 “For the Motion” i.e. e-learning is the need of the hour and here are my views in support of e-learning:

• Generally, it is believed that online learning student won’t be paying much attention and will not give class room atmosphere. But I am of opinion that Online learning is no longer the “easy way out”, as we think. In fact, online learning environments are more rigorous, and student is active learner here.

• A person can be physically present in the classroom, but mentally absent, and no one would know. But in an online environment, especially during live discussions, each participant must be mentally present to progress towards the learning goal of the discussion.

• Synchronous or LIVE activities are real-time activities that require the online presence of all learners and the instructor. These activities involve commenting and forming opinions on a concept presented by the instructor. This is very similar to a traditional class discussion activity.

• There is opportunity for the instructor in online mode to moderate and redirect the conversation towards the desired objective. He can remind them caution them to stay on the topic and avoid correcting typed language by other participants.

• Online discussions can be held in in an asynchronous environment. Learners and instructors log in at their convenience and add their comments (according to the commenting rubric). The instructor and peers provide feedback on their own schedule. This creates a self-paced learning environment. Hence, it is no longer about who knows the most at the current time, rather, who prepared the most for a given time. Students can also enjoy the flexibility of submitting their opinions online. The quality of discussion might also prove to be greater than live discussion, simply due to the fact that we reveal more and form better ideas, when we write.

• A greater deal of self-direction and discipline is required for a successful online education. Here the student holds greater responsibility towards their learning. They are conscious of their time and schedule, and try to meet deadlines they have signed up for, by accepting the course. A traditional learning environment, on the other hand, does not require a similar degree of self-discipline nor is it flexible in terms of deadlines and class meeting times.

• Online Learning has greater Reading Requirements - A lot is said and done in a traditional classroom through language, facial expressions, and body language. To make up for such clues and ideas, online courses have greater reading requirements. It is safe to project that the online learning environment is a greater reading environment. For first, the instructor posts a lesson and related readings. Moreover, the assignment has more directions and a deadline to adhere to. As for the learners, they complete the assignment and upload it to the learning management system.

• Compared to where traditional lecture which progresses through notes reading and writing in online mode there are activities and interacting with peers and an instructor requires emotional writing skills that portray the message as accurately as possible. Even though feedback is delayed compared to traditional teaching the lag time can be shortened by including multiple peers.

• As all our students are tech savvy and this digital literacy is what we can use navigate, discuss and create information as students already know basic word and numerical processing. Most of them already have smart phone and access to net in college library.

• There is scope for creating social media page for the scope and mention all relevant points which students can ponder over when needed. Successful online students are prepared for the dynamic technical environment and strive to enhance their expertise in using technical tools. A Facebook page can be created, and students can be added as friend’s request. We can reach out to vast volume of peers with this.

• The big difference is role played by teacher. In traditional classroom the instructor leads the learning process and teaching is pedagogy where as role is changed to facilitator and becomes a mentor who only guides the students to learn. There is increased student autonomy and enhanced individual learning. This shift from a curriculum-centered to a learner-centered environment makes eLearning a winning proposition.

• At the same time e-learning is not entirely different from traditional learning which our students are used to, as it also involves presentation of ideas by the students, group discussions, arguments and any other forms of conveying information and accumulating knowledge. The contents of the course’s curriculum might be organized according to subjects and in a serial manner.

• E learning also has additional advantages like time for digesting the information and responding, enhanced communication among the learners, both about quality and as regards urgency, knowledge being acquired and transferred among the students themselves, the ability to conduct an open discussion, where each learner gets more of an equal standing than in a face-to-face discussion, access to information and to discussion ability, responses may be made around the clock with no restrictions, a higher motivation and involvement in the process on the part of the learners.

There are many points in favour of e-Learning which presents a ton of advantages over traditional formats of training. Because of always-on, always-connected culture of online learning I think e-learning should be introduced in our traditional medical education and hence is the need of the hour.

Thank you all

As already pointed out by you madam students are techno savvy and what we are trying to do is use the same medium which they use as means of learning. It actually gives them time to both socialize and concentrate on studies according to their wish. There will be good mentor and student interaction. Our students are mature enough to understand the need to study. And for for those students who focus on socialising they will do it even in traditional class the same.

Dr Sharon ,merry Christmas ,i would like to support Dr Padmanabh ,concentration lapses or intrusions can happen in conventional teaching also ,so many times we call our students bodily present, mentally absent so it is our duty to make e learning so active and exciting that we can hold the attention of the students, coming to lack of knowledge about e learning ,students are smarter nowadays and are faster with technology too and mundane things like power supply ,connectivity shall be sorted out and solved by active and able administrators, where there is a will there is always a way for sure

Dear madam

I would like to clarify your doubts

1. Concentration lapse is not the major issue here because student is learning when he wants to learn not when we want them to them. He/she will be more active in e learning

2. In todays world its only geriatric population which is finding difficulty in learning and most our population is young and already techno savvy and it should not be a hindrance. And for those who have difficulty we can teach them.

3. Problems of connectivity is not a major issue as no one in todays scenario dependence on single net connectivity and they can use wifi tethering of friends to connect. Even in traditional learning students miss classes due to logistic or domestic problem.

Thanks for raising issues and hope I have clarified them

2) E-Learning can be done from any place getting connected to any part of world.

3) E-Learning helps in accessibility to complete knowledge including recent updates, present trends etc. Any scientific research content is available which not only clears doubt but saves time & cost needed to know.

4) Learning (E-Learning) can be done any time mainly free time irrespective of time whether ill health, other works etc.. So no class to be missed and one can retake the lesson in need.

Here are my inputs in favour of the motion

E-learning is necessity of the hour because it is not fixed or time bound to a particular schedule and is very easily accessible, so learners can choose a place and time of their own liking, teachers can also update and edit learning material at their own convenience, Accessibility of content via small size of gadgets, mostly hand-held, also complements this feature, main impt point is that E-learning does not have any boundaries and is useful in remote and rural areas as well, Learners may belong to any part of globe, Rare cases and diseases peculiar to a particular geographical area can also be studied globally. More number of students can be taken up at same time, thereby reducing time needed for total lectures.Content once made is eternal, and can be revisited any number of times. E-learning can be used to practice skills before actually encountering real patient. This decreases probability of error , saves time and allows repetition, thereby improvement in the desired skills occurs ,Helps in deeper learning, increases self-motivation, and fulfils adult learning principles, It also allows participants to set their own pace as per their learning styles and can be used as best suited tool for personalized and interactive e-learning experience. It is tailored to student’s needs and is learner-centered, thus helping in self-directed learning, It also allows participants to set their own pace as per their learning styles and can be used as best suited tool for personalized and interactive e-learning experience. Very apt points.But-------

1.The recent rapid development of information technology has allowed electronic learning or “elearning” to obtain a place in the “teaching toolbox”.

Most medical students view e-learning as enjoyable and effective but, interestingly, do not see it replacing traditional didactic methods.

2.The satisfaction is not correlated with test scores, where there is often no significant difference between the two pedagogic approaches.

1.“Lessons in the practical arts demand the presence and help of a master.” Collectanae, Pietro Monte, 1509 AD.

*Psychomotor (physical) skills are best learned by doing them. Most of these cannot be learned from a computer.

2.Some packages allow the student to take a virtual history using a bank of questions and examine the virtual patient. This may have a place but it is difficult to envisage how pointing and clicking on a stethoscope, then dragging it to the patient's chest to listen to a virtual heart will be of much benefit. Such skills are probably best learnt along with other psychomotor skills at the bedside or in the simulator.

Interaction and repetitions are the cornerstones for learning any skill. Traditional learning has more human involvement; thus opportunity for repetition is curtailed so as to respect patient autonomy and prevent psychological stress to the patient as well as the student. E-learning involves technology and simulation, which can be repeated any number of times, exactly the same way or in changed scenario to improve the levels of learning. Innovations in technology and devices have brought a revolution in learning. The field of medical education cannot remain immune to the effects of this aptly called E-revolution. In the era of computers and hand-held devices, teaching and learning have gone far beyond the textbooks, venturing into various components of the digital world. The United Nations and WHO have acknowledged e-learning as a useful tool in addressing educational needs in healthcare workers, especially in developing countries.

The integration of e-learning in medical education is the need of the hour. Medical Council of India (MCI), the regulatory body of medical education in India, has recognized the importance of the technology and has included the use of electronic means in the broad competency “Lifelong learner committed to continuous improvement of skills and knowledge. An Indian medical graduate must have obtained this competency at the time of graduation. The student has to continuously acquire new skills and keep himself abreast of latest development, a goal presently considered difficult to attain in the absence of technology. The use of e-learning can help them achieve the goal of continuous professional development, considering the vastness of syllabus, paucity of time, and already overburdened schedules.

Recognizing the importance of information technology for the doctor of today, the General Medical Council in UK also advocates that medical graduates should be able to “make effective use of computers and other information systems, including storing and retrieving information.”

Dear co-learners and faculty, I, Dr Shiva Saidapur, 2017 batch giving my response for the motion that is ''E-learning is the need of the hour''

In the face of changing technology, the way learners learn is changing.

The expectation of the current digital and tech savvy students is that they want a mobile, relevant, personalised and self-paced content at a point of need. This is because the digital revolution and smartphones have triggered huge changes in how we access, consume, discuss, and share content. Many people want learning at a point of need and at their convinient time as many learn in evenings and at weekends or during travelling in a train or bus.

E-Learning is an active process, and e-learning encourages an active involvement of a learner. A key advantage to getting your learning online and multi-device is that it ensures you are in sync with modern learners.

With e-learning, there is no restriction of time or place. Learners can access any relevant and authorised information at any time from comfort of their home or work place which will save time and allow learning without undue pressure. The key advantage of e-learning is that it has quicker delivery cycle times than traditional classroom-based lectures.

E-Learning mainly helps in self-directed learning which will lead to increased retention of knowledge. Learners can focus on elements of a programme they need to learn and can skip the content that they already know.

E-learning is cost-effective and environment friendly ( less paper use)

So I feel that e-learning has an important role in teaching of medical students as there are many areas where e-learning can be implemented with successful outcome. So it is the need of the hour to incorporate E-learning as one of our teaching and learning methods.

Dear All,

E-learning has been already more than decades old but not been made available to our students everywhere!

I would say our curriculum has been diseased with "curiculosclerosis" and not been treated with TL methods that can bring cure or control of this disease.

Most have mobile in their hands, computers on their lap BUT were blaming NO DATA due to high data cost few years ago. NOW its changing India and world. You have cheaper data and range of service providers.

We have students who are tech savvy - ISP (internet service providers) who are providing low cost data - Digital market providing less cost tools - revolutionized IT sector providing free and nominal cost platforms.

BUT we have RESISTANT teachers who are throwing a BLIND EYE over this and sticking to age old diseased curriculum or their conventional TL methods.

We accept CT SCAN or MRI/PET SCAN for our patients to get the best out of technology for treatment BUT not E-learning the latest technology to teach our students. DOUBLE STANDARDS!

MCI and our Medical Universities have already started recommending E-learning to make a student "LIFE LONG LEARNER" which can be best achieved by e-learning.

Having all the resources we need to gear up to meet the present generation medical students needs and future generation community needs that will be met by these students.

Dear ACME family of Co-learners,

I am Dr.Vidya.S.Patil from ACME 2017, and here are inputs to Debate for the motion “E-learning is the Need of the hour” for Thread 1.2 of E learning

E Learning presents a ton of advantages over traditional formats of training. This fact is even more so true for busy professionals, who are pressed for time and responsibilities.

Here I put forward my points in favor of E –learning

Reduced instructor supervision leads to increased student autonomy, and let’s not forget that online learning is all about individualized learning. This is the leading difference and advantage of eLearning vs traditional learning. The learner experiences a one-on-one, tailored instruction that is not possible in the traditional environment. A shift from a curriculum-centered to a learner-centered environment makes eLearning a winning proposition.

The quality of discussion might also prove to be greater than live discussion, simply due to the fact that we reveal more and form better ideas, when we write.

The digital revolution and smartphone boom has triggered huge changes in how we access, consume, discuss, and share content. Naturally, learning is following suit. Whilst many want learning at a point of need, many learn in evenings and at weekends and on the way to or from work.

A key advantage to getting your learning online and multi device is that it ensures you are in sync with modern learners - delivering the type of content they want, when they want it. Get learners on-side, and you're more likely to get the results you need. Plus, digital, self-paced learning can be accessed at point of need, not somewhere else - like a classroom far away - so employees can apply what they've learnt straight away.

Studies on e learning and evidence found in Kineo case studies have made it increasingly clear that e learning has the following positive benefits for learners:

• better attitude toward the e learning format and training in general

• improved scores on tests, certifications or other evaluations

• increase in number of learners who achieve ‘mastery’ level and / or ‘pass’ exams

• greater ability to apply the new knowledge or processes on the job

• better long-term retention of information

By providing an alternative to the paper-based learning and testing of traditional classrooms, e learning is an effective way for organisations to significantly reduce their carbon footprint.

A study by the Open University found that on average, the production and provision of distance learning courses consumed nearly 90 percent less energy and produced 85 percent fewer CO2 emissions per student than conventional campus-based university courses.

The key areas in which e learning lowers an organisations’ environmental impact are as follows:

• cuts down on the travel and accommodation costs associated with undertaking a course

• reduces the need for a campus site and the accompanying costs of maintaining the facility and equipment

• eliminates the need for paper, thus saving trees

At a time when change is faster than ever, a key advantage of elearning is that it has quicker delivery cycle times than traditional classroom-based instruction. In fact, research indicates that e learning reduces learning time by at least 25 to 60 percent when compared to traditional learning. E learning cuts down on the training time required because:

• it does not take as long to start and wrap up a learning session

• learners set their own pace, rather than the pace of the group

• no travel time is needed to get to and from training events

• learners can focus on elements of a programme they need to learn and can skip what they already know

Our participation in this new endeavour of debating online so comfortably and easily putting our view points at our own pace and enough time to interact, itself favours e-learning and we are also able to see the results of our debates concurrently on the screen. Amazing area of e-learning, nothing to stop it as benefits definitely outweigh the lacunae!!

Good Debating going on!! Thank you all.

Dear Dr Vidya s Patil ,

Your inputs are agreeable but i disagree on this point :

Reduced instructor supervision leads to increased student autonomy, and let’s not forget that online learning is all about individualized learning.

Competent Teacher plays a very important role in guiding and monitoring students in Face To Face scenario , as propensity to listen and oblige is high when students divert , continuous monitoring both physical & mental is Possible traditional method , as students have to face teacher and are more obliged & compelled to listen.

Autonomy only diverts students focus & goal.

I would like to clarify the point.

Providing autonomy to learners is a very important aspect of motivation of students towards learning.

Mentor by the side in e learning suits better than leader in the front as in conventional learning for providing autonomy to students.

Once students are given their autonomy it builds their motivation to learn and the cycle of independent learning begins. Intrinsic motivation plays a very important part of medical students for learning which is provided by autonomy.

Dear all, I am Dr Deepak Kanabur, 2016 batch, debating for the motion “ Yes, e-learning is the need of the hour”.

I would like to offer my debate point on three vital issues that concerns all of us teachers and which we all struggle against.

1. We want our students to be interactive while learning and to freely ask their queries and doubts. Even though the students have many doubts, very few come forward to ask because of the fear that how others would look at it and laugh at them. This stumbling block can be very well overcome by the e-learning platform. Every student would have the safe environment to ask queries without being ridiculed.

2. We know that every student learns at her/his own pace but we are unable to find a way to address this issue in traditional setup. However, e-learning gives complete freedom to the students to proceed at their own pace.

3. We teachers have always seen how one student’s negative behavior and attitude becomes disruptive and affects the whole class. This kind of incident completely nullifies the teacher’s efforts and wastes the valuable time of both teachers and students. E-learning has no place for such issues where it is a controlled classroom environment.

Hence, for these issues to be overcome, e-learning is the need of the hour.

Dear all,

My inputs for the question 2 thread 1.2

(eLearning is the need of the hour)

The latest technology has revolutionized learning. In the 21st century, people are more centric towards learning.

Here are the reasons why eLearning is important :

Accessible Anywhere and Anytime: The internet offers the logical solution for an organization's training goals. Over 80% of professional employees already rely on the computers for learning. Nowadays, technical issues like standards, access and infrastructure, don't matter much for organizations. The development of the World Wide Web, corporate networks and high-speed computers make learning available to people 24 hours and 7 days worldwide. It enables organizations to share training information to multiple locations conveniently.

Cost Savings: When delivered through digital solutions, training is less costly. The top benefit of eLearning is that it diminishes the expense of getting professionals in the same place. The online eLearning courses can be spread out over many days or weeks so that organizations would not lose their employees for entire days. Employees can improve their performance and utilize their time effectively and efficiently.

Timely Access to Timely Information: Web-based products let professionals to update materials globally without any delay. It keeps content consistent and gives employees instant access to the latest information. Information can be acquired in a timely manner.

Increase Productivity: It's no secret that online learning is not confined by geography or time. With eLearning, you can learn more with less. Online learning is an intuitive way to offer latest tools and skills to employees to help them enhance their performance and productivity.

Standardization: The best thing about eLearning is that it lets you create a standardized process in the delivery of content. It also lowers delivery time. Keep in mind that eLearning deliver consistent content.

Lower Employee Turnover Rates: Happy employees are those who remain loyal to your organization. Employees can fulfill their professional goals and can improve their work performance with the online access to training and learning modules. They can also pinpoint the fields they need to work on to become better employees for your organization.

Quick Training Updates: Latest updates are quite simple with online training sessions. With online learning, you can easily stay up-to-date with policies.

Eliminate the Requirement for In-House Instructors: Believe it or not, one of the top advantages of online training is that there is no requirement for an in-house instructor. It implies that you need not to worry about the travel or accommodation for the instructor and any other facilities.

Improve Knowledge Retention: When employees learn in an engaging environment, then it leads to enhanced knowledge and skill set retention. Providing them with interactive and reality-based scenarios allows you to grab the information effectively and efficiently.

Persuade Sharing: The base of a learning community is built on sharing your knowledge with others. So, adding a forum or wiki adds value to your online learning. Based on how the course is prepared, you can persuade sharing of resources and insight acquired from the online eLearning courses. eLearning is the cost-effective way to produce great results in an organization. It's important to use it effectively to improve productivity.

Knowledge retention is maximised by interest, repeatability, proper understanding of content. Even though students have the provision of practical exposure, clinical exposure towards patients in our setup, only those students whose motivation level is high will take advantage of these things. other students just attend passively even though we present them the real life scenario. So it really matters whether student is motivated or no. When student is motivated, he can very well engage himself better in e learning and do well.

Depending solely on an e-Learning platform can make learning less personal, less engaging, and, in the process, less effective.

1. No self-discipline

The main advantage is that it is self-paced. However, because of this inherent freedom, it often translates to no learning. People may switch off from fully engaging in the material, and see the activity as a tick box exercise.

In a self-paced environment, an e-learning task can undergo an irresistible gravitational pull to the bottom of the list, where it can languish for days, weeks, or even indefinitely. The fact is, many people find it much easier to internalize new skills and knowledge through active training sessions with other people, than through an impersonal e-learning module.

2. No face-to-face interaction

While e-learning can be quite interactive these days, through the use of video conferences, webinars, and face-to-face video chat, it still isn’t the same as sitting across the room from a real person. Simply put, there is no substitute for interacting with, and learning from, a fellow human.

3. Lack of flexibility

More complex skills and competencies, it is incredibly difficult to put together an effective e-Learning programme. And in clinical /surgical branches, these complex skills are often the most crucial. The best learning happens when students discover the solutions on their own – by asking questions and obtaining clarification – and with e-learning this is difficult, if not impossible, to do.

4. Lack of input from trainers

E-learning is structured. When a programme is developed, it is based on what the course developers think is the right curriculum at the time. However, learning materials can quickly become outdated – and may contain errors even from the beginning.

The best trainers will sit and talk to people and engage with them to find out what they need to know, and how they need to learn it. Student feedback is highly valuable, however, that's far less possible with an e-learning course.

Skilled trainers and subject matter experts are at their very best when they are being grilled by - and interacting with - their students. This interaction results in a better training process and better trainers. In e-learning, it's largely not present.

5. Slow evolution

After an e-learning course is developed, it can take an inordinately long time for any needed changes to be worked in.

However, with standard training – conducted in the training room, the course can be changed rapidly and even on the fly. Live training remains fluid, and will always be in tune with the particular needs.

6. Good e-learning is difficult to do

Developing a really effective e-learning course takes time, money, and a great amount of expertise. A good e-Learning course involves multimedia, custom web development, technical support, and strong User Interaction design. With live training, the standard systems, processes, and best practices are far more established and well understood.

7. Lack of transformational power

It should be said that e-learning is effective for training process execution and for imparting certain kinds of knowledge. However, real learning – game changing learning – comes about through live connection with a more experienced practitioner.

It is through this engagement that a true transformation occurs and the learner becomes more effective as an individual, moving to their next level of performance. Such change is not par for the course with e-learning.

8. No peripheral benefits

When you bring together a team of people to be trained with subject matter experts, you set the stage for something more than just basic learning. If structured right, the dynamics of personality, intelligence, vision, and creativity all intertwine to create a group that is more than the sum of its parts.

Similarly, live training can foster team-building and create an environment where individuals deepen their relationships, get know each other better and learn in a unique environment where they all have the same goal.

Prashanth Sir,

The main advantage of e learning is that it is self paced. This has the advantage for slow as well as fast learners. Slow learners need not get anxious with failures.

Indeed it is more flexible as concerned to content, pace, time and place.

It is updated faster than conventional. Infact in conventional teaching , it is taken from textbooks which definitely fall behind the current information.

Dear all,

This is Dr.S.Sharon Sonia,ACME 2017.

“ Please find my response to Thread 1.2elearningbasics

23rdDec201726th Dec 2017”

I’m in Group 2- Against the Motion (No, E-learning is waste of time and resources)

“Space is big, really big...”—The Hitch‐Hikers Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams

Medicine comprises a vast collection of knowledge, skills and attitudes. The trainee practitioner must achieve a large number of learning objectives within each domain of learning to be considered competent to practice.Continuing professional development (CPD) is required to maintain and further develop competence.

The following are the reasons why E-learning is a waste of time & resources:

1. Unmotivated learners or those with poor study habits may fall behind.Self-motivation on the

part of the learner makes e-learning work.

2. Students may feel isolated or miss social interaction

Many critics consider that using e-mail or chat rooms to obtain a contact with the professor is actually the main disadvantage of this system of learning.Face-to-face contact is missing as well as the opportunity of student-professor relationship building.

3. Lack of familiar structure and routine may take getting used to.

4. Instructor may not always be available on demand

5. Costly setup is needed.Slow or unreliable Internet connections can be frustrating

6. Managing learning software can involve a learning curve

7. Some courses such as traditional hands-on courses can be difficult to simulate

Multimedia technologies must be congruent with the organizations learning model and actual teaching practices as well as with students’ expectations and capabilities for autonomy and self-direction.

8.The acquisition of learning objectives in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education can be achieved by a mixture of modalities including

apprenticeship,

didactic teaching (lecturing),

self study and

small group learning.

It is clear that some of these teaching tools are better than others at helping the learner achieve his or her objectives.

9.The recent rapid development of information technology has allowed electronic learning or “elearning” to obtain a place in the “teaching toolbox”.

Most medical students view e-learning as enjoyable and effective but, interestingly, do not see it replacing traditional didactic methods.

10.The satisfaction is not correlated with test scores, where there is often no significant difference between the two pedagogic approaches.

11.“Lessons in the practical arts demand the presence and help of a master.” Collectanae, Pietro Monte, 1509 AD.

*Psychomotor (physical) skills are best learned by doing them. Most of these cannot be learned from a computer.

12.Some packages allow the student to take a virtual history using a bank of questions and examine the virtual patient. This may have a place but it is difficult to envisage how pointing and clicking on a stethoscope then dragging it to the patient's chest to listen to a virtual heart will be of much benefit. Such skills are probably best learnt along with other psychomotor skills at the bedside or in the simulator.

13.From a simple ‘disseminator of content’, teachers are increasingly metamorphosing into ‘facilitators for learning’.Computers are good at storing information. They reproduce it accurately time after time and, with appropriate connections, can transmit that knowledge to where it is needed.But-----

As with all enhancements it is important that they are used appropriately and do not detract from the message the teacher is trying to convey.

14.The development of case scenarios is very time consuming and interactivty is still limited by the imagination of the subject expert writing the case and, to some degree, by the content engineer who programmes it.

15.Even with today’s extensive and pervasive use of technology in medical education, some of the basic questions related to the role of e-learning remain unanswered, such as:

16.Internet security is definitely one of the biggest problems of the Internet & intrution by hackers.

17.Assessment problems:In the assessment of the authentic situation the following issues should be addressed

• Traditional methods demonstrate better organization and they are clearer in respect to distance learning

• Organization and needs for more efficient influence of distance learning very often improve traditional methods by teachers

To conclude, even though e-Learning has the propensity to be an useful innovative educational tool, it requires a costly set-up,uninterrupted connectivity, power supply, internet security &the;lack of human touch or interaction makes it a double-edged educational tool.

I struggled and wasted my time in getting this. I think this is my personal experience.

though e-learning is useful to some extent, medical student can not learn all the domains through this.

Some aspects of the subject can only be learnt by doing.

Inspection, palpation, percussion & auscultation skills which we learn during clinical posting -is it possible thro' e-learning

teachers are the role models while taking history, affective domain etc.

core competencies like leadership in team work, communication skill, managerial skills are achieved by clinical work and field work.

i want to counter Dr.Sail leela madams argument.

From a simple ‘disseminator of content’, teachers are increasingly metamorphosing into ‘facilitators for learning’ , which is facilitated by e-learning tools that provide a variety of online resources .

E-learning technology can be used in the augmentation of all the learning domains viz., cognitive, psychomotor and affective.

In the cognitive domain, group teaching in classrooms could be enhanced by providing online material like pre-lecture assignments and audio-video clips during the sessions. Even students could be provided with virtual resources like audio-video clips, podcasts, animations, and web-links for self-directed learning intended to be used at home, or as part of Flipped lectures.

Psychomotor skills, although best learnt with real practice, can also be augmented by technology, at least up to the ‘knows how’ level. Audio-visual demonstration of procedures, diagnostics and interventions can be provided. Students may read through the explanations and view checklists of procedural skills before actually practicing the same under supervision in clinical postings or in skill laboratories.

In the affective domain, videos of scenarios depicting good and bad communication-skills, role-plays and counselling sessions, and self-recordings can be used to stimulate learning. Other modalities include online case-studies and patient logs, clinical decision support systems, virtual patients, medical video games, E-books, e-atlases, teaching databases, and digital versions of online journals

I would like to disagree with many.

Development of case scenarios - is actually more and easily managed in digital media with more options and explanations than with real ones.

Even now when many of the teachers start planning any cases most of them refer to digital media for variety rather than going by their experiences, because you get more of it with wide experiences shared by all rather than going by individual experiences.

Dear all,

I am Dr. P. Sujith Devaprasad, ACME 2017 Batch, Group 2 in the debate, with my inputs.

e-learning is a waste of time and resources

In today’s online era, the concept of a classroom extends beyond a walled room with desks and chairs and into the realm of cyber space. One finds the blackboard being replaced by smartboard and keypads replacing chalk. The continual evolution of technology enables a growing number of students to rely on the Internet for education instead of the traditional classroom-style learning. While distance learning seems an ideal solution, it is better to stick to the old-fashioned academic format due to the following reasons.

1. Provides interactive classroom setting that promotes the open exchange of ideas:

Having numerous students learning in the same classroom has the added benefit of allowing students to exchange ideas and questions with one another providing another valuable learning medium that online environments cannot replicate. First-hand interaction with the educating professor also allows for ideas to be exchanged freely and without any communication barriers. This is an added social benefit as well as an educational aid.

Even if a virtual classroom is full of students, the lack of personal interaction might make one feel detached and lonely and affect the learning curve adversely.

2. Changing technology may create barriers to accessing learning environments:

As with any new teaching method, online learning has faced much criticism from many sources as it is claimed to have devalued post secondary education which will reduce the effectiveness of obtaining quality career positions by obtaining higher education.

Medical researchers claim that there are many existing barriers to effectively learning complex subjects in an online-only setting. They also feel that it isolates the students from one another as well as their instructor reducing the overall outcome of the course.

3. Limited understanding of effective teaching methods:

There has been little research conducted to evaluate the teaching methods or the effectiveness of student comprehension through an online-only learning environment. Hence it is better to invest in the time-tested traditional teaching/learning methodology.

4. Medical education is quite unique and using e-learning trivializes the holistic concept of conventional medical education which has a strong foundation anchored on training, mentoring and assessment under close supervision.

Elements of professionalism, ethics and communication skills which are essential aspects of medical training are not easy to teach using e-learning methods.

4. The learning atmosphere of the traditional classroom helps them to stay focused and keeps them motivated; unlike virtual classrooms, where procrastination can become a common attitude, traditional classrooms preserve a feeling of “now and here” all through the learning process.

5. Some students don’t have access to technological devices, so online classes are out of question. Some don’t know how to use them, and some don’t care about them.

6. Lack of Discipline:

Since one doesn’t have a teacher/instructor nearby, reminding deadlines, asking for assignments, there are chances that a distance learning program is not taken seriously and very often the teacher is ignored easily.

---Don't know is not an excuse. Now a days every thing is getting online. Right from the bill payments , dispatching the medical reports, etc. Newly there is a system of online correction of the answer papers. Most of the senior faculty though they are facing a problem in online system of corrections are still managing to cope up with the newer system. 1. E-learning is a virtual learning method without a guide on your side.

2. Apart from many technical issues, learner’s satisfaction is least and therefore results in high dropouts from e-learning courses.

3. There is no immediate feedback and learner has to wait for the feedback from the teacher and make any required modification. This will steal the concentration and interest.

4. Poor quality of e-learning module will also be a waste of time and resources. For example, if participants play a passive role, meaning they are not required to do or say anything except watch or listen, is an incredibly ineffective way of educating. If learners aren’t required to think about or apply what they’re learning, then they’re not going to learn anything.

Therefore e-learning is just waste of time and money.

4. Poor quality many timed happen in traditional teaching because it is one time like hit and run (no option of correction) unlike in e learning where we have option of modifying it periodically to suit the needs of learner.

5. There are numerous way of making e-learning interactive, innovative and interesting to students. Just the teachers must spend some time to build a good module like planning for a class. 2. Many a times weather disrupts the connectivity of moderators side. With the best available technology as well. Rescheduling will lead to absenteeism and may lead to discontinuation.

3. How will you show Empathy when giving feedback? Feedback has many elements and it is difficult to discuss everything online. Time constraint is another factor.

4. Making module interactive for every session in e-learning is a cumbersome work, whereas in traditional teaching in the classroom can be made innovative and interactive as required and at any time.

5. E-teaching is for those people who are afraid of the stage and use Blackboard. There are much more chances of manipulation. Traditional teaching requires a lot of preparation, knowledge and skills.

Against the motion –e learning is a waste of time and resources

1. e-learning challenges the way we teach. The highest rates of distance courses dropout are due to the insufficient efforts in realizing the value of e-learning.

2. The vast majority of e-learning applications fail to establish a unique learning experience suitable for the learners’ preference (Urdan and Weggen 2000)

3. The static approach to learning content limits the willingness of many people to use ICT’s in order tolearn. Especially in ac

4. e-learning requires much more effort for equivalent or improved learning outcomes in comparison to traditional learning.

5. e-learning value proposition and consequently the e-learning loyalty and hence the higher acceptance of e-learning depends on joint efforts that combine teachers, students, technology, learning processes, dynamic futures

6. 6.Sharing a lot of text leading to a large amount of reading from the screen .

Vijaya madam,

I would like to clarify few points -

Sharing a lot of text leading to a large amount of reading from the screen

Time consumption –e learning consumes a lot of time

Lack of high quality and relevant content

Failure to recognize the target audience

E-learning diminishes creativity

----Content of the topic is delivered in such a way that the students can easily understand and grasp the relevant points( must know areas)

-----e- learning does not consume lot of time. In fact it saves a lot of time

----It is highly beneficial to the slow learners as they can go through the discussion any number of times which is not possible in traditional teaching.

Thank you,

RESPECTED ALL,

THIS IS DR.ANUPAMA .M.G (ACME 2017)

HERE IS MY ANSWER TO THREAD 1.2 (Q 2)

2. e-learning is the need of the Hour/ e-learning is a waste of time and resources – DEBATE

Disadvantages and risks of e-learning may include the following:

• It requires new skills in content producers, and still must clearly demonstrate a return on investment. Additionally, related technology may be intimidating, confusing or simply frustrating, lacking part of the informal social interaction and face-to-face contact of traditional classroom training.

• Expensive: start-up cost of an elearning service is expensive and the cost of production of online training materials is very high. Teachers must be confident that the extra costs are balance with the benefits of delivering a course online. Significant time needs to be invested in course set-up and in ongoing maintenance (checking links, updating course content etc.). Enabling technology might also be costly in case of advanced technology. Moreover, e-learning requires more responsibility and self-discipline for the learner to keep up with a more free and unconstrained learning process and schedule.

• The distant teacher has no visual cues: without the use of a real-time visual medium the teacher receives no visual information from the distant sites. In any case, even if accessible, these cues are filtered by technology and it may be difficult to carry on a teacher–class discussion effectively when spontaneity is altered by technical requirements and distance

• Separation by distance also affects the class environment: living in different communities deprives the teacher and students of a common community link.

• Technology dependent: learners will need access to a machine of minimum specification as dictated by the e learning supplier or access to a service with a high bandwidth to transfer the course materials in a timely way.

• Material Incompatibility: some materials designed for one particular system will not function properly on another (for example, the Apple Macintosh and the Windows PC). Standards will help in the area.

• Unsuitable for Certain Types of Training: any skill that relies heavily on inter-personal contact although these courses could be supplemented by e learning.

• Unsuitable for Certain Types of Learners: e learning requires a high-level of self-discipline and personal time management. E Learners need to be highly self-motivated to take full advantage of the medium as often the online learning experience can be impersonal. Working through 'packaged' programmes can be irritating.

• Reliant of the Quality of the Content: it is too easy for some institutions to defer the photocopying costs onto the learner by placing all lecture notes and course handouts online. Such practices often mean that the course materials are in an inappropriate format for online learning. Course providers need to develop new technical skills and course design skills to suit the new medium.

• Social/economic disadvantage: can limit or prevent access by some student groups (for example, cost of equipment, online access and printing).

• No Match for Face-to-Face Teaching: Electronic communication does not necessarily provide a good match for face-to-face communication and is more linear than face-to-face discussion.

• Disabilities: Students with visual or physical impairments may be disadvantaged.

• Inflexible: Flexibility may be lost as adjustments to the course in response to student reaction are not easy to make once the course is underway.

• Pedagogically Unsound: The electronic environment does not per se offer a pedagogically enhancing learning environment

Good evening all,This is V.Srinivas kumar acme 2017 batch,

My arguement is E-LEARNING Is a waste of time and resources,As in conventonal teaching the direct interaction between the students and teacher as well as the student with the co students is possible but in virtual class room ,this is not posssible

The slow learners can be idenfied by the teacher by direct super vision and special coaching and efforts can be made by the teacher to improve them but in E-Learning this is not possible.

Providing all the gadgets like hand computers , mp3 system etc is practically not possible to teach poor students by e- learning method

Learning of the students is more effective by the supervision of the teacher

E-LEARNING IS WASTE OF TIME AND RESOURCE

• Not all eLearning is created equal; much of it is a complete waste of time with limited active or engaging learning actually happening.

• It’s easy to waste money and time on eLearning that will bring no benefit to learner performance, especially when the vast majority of eLearning modules claim to have ‘interactive’ or ‘engaging’ learning. Training should be about performance

• The majority of integrated e-learning platforms seems to be unable to support different degrees of value delivery.

• High dropout rates from e-learning courses, low learner satisfaction, ambiguous performance, seem to justify their opinion.

• E-learning Lecture based courses very often fail to promote value creating processes both for learners and teachers and their realization requires enormous efforts.

• The complexity of learning as a cognitive and knowledge oriented process makes the establishment of effective e-learning processes using ICT’s more difficult.

• The available technology expands from time to time the alternatives of implementation but the core competencies are constructed around clear ideas and underlying concepts.

• Does the e-learning environment combines knowledge, motivation, needs fulfilment, problem solving, and other? As learning depends on all these aspects

• E-learning requires much more effort for equivalent or improved learning outcomes in comparison to traditional learning ,but unfortunately technology is only a driver not a catalyst.

• The e-learning value proposition and consequently the e-learning loyalty and hence the higher acceptance of e-learning depends on joint efforts that combine teachers, students, technology, learning processes and dynamic futures.

• E-learning is a waste of time only if we dont believe it as a value adding process that challenges the way of teaching.

Dear all,

I would like to share my views on e- learning which waste of time is.

1. At the undergraduate level the learner is supposed gain sound knowledge

Theoretically and practical skills need to be shown and have to performed by the Candidate. By gaining information from the e-learning cannot make him complete doctor.

2. Developing oral communication skills is not possible which is the most important quality that need to be acquired over a period of time to interact with patients.

3. Many students securing seats are from poor economic background. They cannot afford to pay monthly net charges. College can support to some extent but unless the student has his own resources he cannot continue independently. This makes few students only to gain skills in e-learning. So to bring the uniform knowledge gaining and sharing will be difficult.

1 we are suggesting blended type of learning where the student is shown and taught most essential things to know and these are followed up by e learning where the student is introduced to audio and video demonstrations which he can practise and see them repeatedly till he masters them

2.Oral communication skills where are we testing in the students in the present system except in the practicals and oral exams where each student gets hardly 5 minutes to interact with us,by e learning we are suggesting videos ,peer evaluation and 360 degree evaluation which can be done even through remote means

3.Show me one single student who has no smart phone ,thanks to the china phones and subsidised net charges thanks to companies like JIO, students are getting rapid net services and remember all colleges now have e libraries

Dear all, I am Dr.Vardendra Kulkarni. I belong to group 2 in the debate. Here are my inputs “against the motion”

E-learning is a waste of time & resources due to the following demerits:

• Unmotivated learners or those with poor study habits may fall behind

• Lack of familiar structure and routine may take time to get used to

• Students may feel isolated or miss social interaction thus the need to understanding different learning styles and individual learner needs.

• Instructor may not always be available on demand

• Slow or unreliable Internet connections can be frustrating

• Managing learning software can involve a learning curve

• Some courses such as traditional hands-on courses can be difficult to simulate

• No self-discipline in the learning process

• No face-to-face interaction between the trainer & the student

• Lack of flexibility in the module

• Lack of input from trainers

• Slow evolution of the learning process

• Good e-learning is difficult to achieve & requires elaborate preparation

• Lack of transformational power.

 Highly motivated students can only cope up with the E-learning. Personal attention and monitoring is requires for other students.

 Hands on experience, real life teaching , real patients is definitely the most important part of Conventional learning which cannot be done in e-leraning.

 Using virtual models and other videos can be costly and will not match the real teaching.

 Each student may not afford to have e-learning devices and network connections. It will be a burden on the institute to arrange for it, moreover it can be misused.

 Soft skills, communication skills can never be learnt as good as in conventional real life learning.

 There is social isolation, there could be technical problems and we really need to test whether it suits all the students.

 So in total, it will definitely waste the teachers time in arranging for all this and is a costly affair.

2) Difficult to manage time as web searching consumes lot of time to access the required information.

3) Not an ideal method to learn practical skills.

4) Difficult to conduct assessment due to lack of sincerity.

I Dr.Latha.G.S.my response to Thread 1.2

Major issue is accessibility,it is time consuming, takes away the student teacher's interaction, not good for clinical skill andanother important thing is technical issues. It doesnot help students to learn communication skills.

The vast majority of e-learning applications (Urdan and Weggen 2000) fail to establish a unique learning experience suitable for the learners’ preferences.

The static approach to learning content limits the willingness of many people to use ICT’s in order to learn. Especially in academic environments the realization of e-learning usually is limited to the deployment of a well known elearning platform such as WebCT, BlackBoard, Learning Space etc, and the adaptation of learning content to the specific supported format for learning objects (Rowley 2000). The utilization of such systems many times reveal the inflexible knowledge management processes of academics since e-learning is about management of knowledge. In other words e-learning requires much more effort for equivalent or improved learning outcomes in comparison to traditional learning. But unfortunately technology is only a driver not a catalyst. The e-learning value proposition and consequently the e-learning loyalty and hence the higher acceptance of e-learning depends on joint efforts that combine teachers, students, technology, learning processes, dynamic futures and so on.

So,I feel it is a waste of time and resources.

It is infact not at all time consuming. The main strength of e learning is to save time and easy access whenever and wherever it is needed.

E learning definitely provides unique learning experience according to individual needs and preferences. It does not depend on the performance or need of the other fellows as in classroom teaching. Each individual can go at their own pace and according to what they need.

All students are well versed with technology, they like and they do get information from internet even today. Information is enormous and not at all static. All can learn and progress as they want.

In a study titled "A Comparison of E-Learning and Traditional Learning: Experimental Approach" the following was found out that the mean scores of students under traditional learning seems to be higher comparing to the E-Learning. A further class size comparison in each semester was suggested that smaller size would reflect higher difference of mean scores of students between E Learning and traditional learning. Both of online and offline programs have a lot in common but they have different aspects as well. A student may personally think E-Learning is better choice because of the flexibility in schedule and the comfort and convenience of learning from home. It provides 24/7 accessibility for students who have time management problems. This means that students need to take more responsibility for their own learning. However, E-Learning has not been all positive. E-Learning methodology has a lack of social-interaction, and it depends on the Internet communication with high cost. “Technology is only a facilitator; it can not replace the teacher.” There is still a need to investigate how E Learning can be better designed for successful delivery and what kind of students are well suited for this E-Learning methodology. Furthermore, the findings from interviews suggested that E-Learning would fail for the following factors: the high cost, Internet connectivity problems, students’ computing ability, and maturity of students. And students in traditional class proposed to have a slight improvement in the students’ achievement by using a blended of E-Learning facility, such as blog, chat room, E-mail and E-store (contents and assignments). In addition, Students suggested having a small class size.

My understanding of the study is

E learning suits medical education in a very limited way.

In traditional learning students benefited from small size classrooms, which is also a benefit for the faculty, which requires more number of faculty.

At the same time more stress on e learning may be a THREAT FOR THE STRENGTH OF FACULTY. As automation is effecting lakhs of jobs in other skilled and semiskilled areas.

In my opinion e learning should be very limited and

IT SHOULD BE USED ONLY AS ADJUVANT
